The 2023 Amplify New Play Festival (ANPF) is a free community celebration encompassing film screenings of the eight finalists of Amplify Series Three, free introductory artist classes, readings from Amplify Series Two winners, a pop-up shop from Definition Innovator small businesses and more.

  • Black Bone

    Discover four academics at a PWI who find out one of them is passing for Black. How does one perform or prove their Blackness? And who gets to judge? Come on down and find out.

    A story about the role time plays on our psyche. We see a young man’s journey in taking responsibility for his actions, paving the way for to not only forgive himself, but finally loving himself again.

  • Salsa, A Slow Death

    This piece covers the gap between generations through music. A father and son attempt to close the “old school vs new school mentality” by discussing political and social issues via hip hop and salsa.

  • Improv 101

    AUG 05 | 1-2 PM

    Instructed by Tyrone Phillips

    Join Definition’s Artistic Director, Tyrone Phillips, in a one hour introductory Improv class! Throughout the course of an hour, folks will be introduced to improv basics to help develop scene work, hone in on active listening skills and fun practical exercises that will keep you saying "yes, and.”

  • Dance/Movement 101

    Instructed by Sadira Muhammad.

    Whether you're a seasoned dancer, an actor that moves or just looking to dip your toes into the world of physical storytelling, this free dance workshops is perfect for everyone. Get ready to groove and express yourself through the power of movement!

  • Playwriting 101

    AUG 05 | 1:30-3 PM

    Instructed by Marsha Estell

    Whether you’ve never written anything before, experienced in another medium of writing, or a playwright looking to sharpen your skills, Playwriting 101 will teach you what makes a scene work, how to develop character through dialogue and action, and how to think in theatrical terms.

  • Acting 101

    Instructed by Alana Arenas

    Whether you're a seasoned actor or just starting out, this event is perfect for anyone interested in exploring the world of acting. In Acting 101, you'll participate in fun acting exercises and gain valuable insights into the craft. This intro workshop will enhance your acting skills and help build stage confidence.
