Inspiring collaboration and community
Launched in early 2019, Definition Theatre Company’s 3.8-million-dollar capital campaign seeks to fund the purchase and rehabilitation of a property in the neighborhood of Woodlawn at 6555 S Cottage Grove; the extension of programming over the next five years, and growth of staff and engagement opportunities. Propelled with a lead gift from the Neighborhood Opportunity Fund, Definition is committed to being a champion for arts-making, education, and engagement that has been missing from the cultural fabric of the south side of Chicago.
Under the leadership of Artistic Director, Tyrone Phillips and Executive Director, Neel McNeill, Definition Theatre Company has redefined what it means to be a great American theater—a company that focuses on equity and inclusion on and off of the stage. In 2016, Former Mayor Rahm Emanuel implemented reforms to the City’s Zoning Code in order to ensure that the growth of downtown drives equitable development throughout the city. These changes leverage new development in and around the Loop to generate funds that will catalyze investment on Chicago’s West, Southwest and South Sides.
With the development and rehabilitation of a new dedicated home for Definition, we can:
Increase arts exposure to families living in Woodlawn and the surrounding community: By expanding our programs, residents can benefit from educational, participative arts-making and engagement.
Improve service quality: The ability to provide more comprehensive programming in one location will be a key factor in helping to increase the skills and knowledge of future artists we engage.
